There has been much debate over the last few months about the role, purpose and effectiveness of the school uniform. From Bradford’s Hanson Academy sending home 200 students for not following uniform rules, to the growing cost of outfitting children under stringent guidelines at a time of austerity. The debate rages on, but it got us thinking about our own school uniforms. We thought we’d have a look back and share our school uniform pictures. Some memories are fond, some less so, but here they are!
Two shades of grey: Founder and Creative Director Janice (left) models Reepham High School’s ensemble, as well as 1984’s classic ‘kitchen-scissors’ fringe. Hanna‘s pictured in 1999 (right) attending Härnösands Gymnasium in Sweden. No school uniform there, so Hanna shares this picture of her in a sailor hat.
Dan (left) shares this publicity shot from his time at Beyton Middle School, Suffolk, in 1991. That striped tie and white shirt is typical of most school uniforms: not quite sure what’s on that plate though. Siobhan attended Scoil Ursula in Ireland, here in 1991 she’s wearing a very flattering yellow blouse with brown accents, brought together by combining both colours on a polyester tie. Wonderful.
Colette (left) gives the side eye at Jesse Gray Primary School in Nottinghamshire in 1998, where the uniform was a chic combination of white blouse and red cardigan. Blue hair clip: model’s own. Meanwhile, Derbyshire boy Matt (right) went to Heritage School in Clowne; yes, that means he went to ‘Clowne school’. He sports a classic white polo shirt/black sweater combo with Heritage motif and monk fringe – way ahead of his time.
