Field Grey were recommended by Design LSM to work on uniform designs for Sam’s Riverside, a neighbourhood brasserie serving Anglo/French food, overlooking Hammersmith Bridge in the newly opened Riverside Studios. Sam looked for a uniform that was welcoming and unique to the venue, and one that would also compliment the restaurant’s warm interiors.

Approach / Our remit was to design a simple range of garments that would be memorable.

The collection is very simple and consists of two aprons: a long-length waist apron and a full-length halter neck apron, both produced in olive-brown cotton. The latter was designed with female staff in mind.

The uniform is paired with a simple, crisp white shirt. Staff wear blue denim and our Readywear toast-coloured sleeve garters to complete their looks, mixing a smart touch with practicality.

The hardware used on the aprons is antique brass, including eyelets and strap adjusters, again complementing the earthy tones of the restaurant’s interiors. The apron ties are a distinctive black herringbone creating a very modern brasserie-style collection that emanates smart elegance without being uptight.

“I found working with Janice and team and her team at Field Grey a real pleasure. Our teams’ uniform and look were such an important part of what I wanted to achieve with my new restaurant and they helped me achieve that. Janice really helped me focus on what we needed and what would work. Our aprons are stylish, practical, and most importantly, unique to us. We get great feedback from the team and guests alike.

If you are working on a new restaurant opening, don’t forget the importance of the right uniform.”

Sam’s Riverside Restauranteur Sam Harrison previously presided over a number of popular brasseries, the first in Chiswick, the second in Balham. He credits Rick Stein as his mentor, once managing his Padstow restaurants.
